Starting a new job? Anxious and nervous?
It is completely normal to feel that way.
We as humans are structured in a certain way that when faced with situations we find challenging, we tend to worry or freak out at the beginning.
The way you handle and overcome is what matters the most. There have been instances of people being fired or quitting a job that is just a few weeks old because their anxiety level is so unbearable and they are not able to fit in well with the rest of the team. Here are some tips to help you get rid of that anxiety or at least keep it under control:
Before you walk into the office, take a deep breath, give a moment to calm your nerves and walk in confidently (be careful not to overdo this, so you don’t come across as arrogant or full of yourself).
Everyone has once been a newcomer at some point in their careers, those colleagues you see right there have also been in the same position as you are in right now, so there is really no need to be afraid. Do not hesitate to ask questions when necessary, asking questions is one way you can get up to speed with the office culture and also the information you need to do your work well.
Connect with your colleagues
Get to know the people you work with after all these are the people you will be seeing every day on the job. Establish a strong working relationship with key people in the organization including your boss. In every organization, there are individuals who know how to get things done either because of their experience on the job or their relationships with key people within the organization. Find out who these people are and develop a relationship with them as they might be the ones to help when you are stuck.
Avoid office politics and gossips, it won’t do you any good.
Don’t be too eager to be proactive
While it is good to get involved and take on active roles in the workplace, it is also advisable that you don’t overdo it or step on another person’s toe. You don’t want to have many enemies so early on the job. Focus on your work and do it well!
Change is actually the only constant thing in life, give yourself time to adjust to the new job.
